US Coins

half dollarThe dime is a US coin worth 50 cents. Two half dollars equal a dollar. One half dollar can be written 50¢ or $0.50. Half dollars have been minted since 1794 (and are still in production). It is not a commonly used coin in the USA.

Half dollars are made out of an alloy (a mixture of metals) of 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel. The coin weighs 11.340 g. The half dollar has a edge with 150 ridges (reeds). This coin is 30.61 mm (1.205 inches) in diameter and is 2.15 mm thick.

The obverse (heads) of the current US half dollar coin pictures a profile of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th President of the USA. The Words "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" surround the portrait. The year of the coin's minting is on the bottom. Just above the date is an initial that indicates where the coin was minted (for example, P=Philadelphia, D=Denver, etc.).

The reverse (tails) of the current US half dollar coin pictures The presidential seal which is a heraldic eagle holding 13 arrows and an olive branch in its claws and a banner ("E pluribus unum" meaning "Out of many, one") in its beak. A shield with 13 stripes protects the eagle. 50 stars surround the eagle. The Words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" line the perimeter.
