Origin: The Pekingese was originally bred in China almost 2000 years ago. It is also known as the Peking Palasthund. This tiny dog used to be known as the "sleeve dog," because Chinese courtiers would carry this royal companion dog in the sleeve of their garments.
Anatomy: The Pekingese is from 6 to 9 inches (15-23 cm) tall at the shoulders and weighs from 7 to 12 pounds (3-6 kg). It has a long, silky coat that comes in many colors. The nose is wide, and the eyes are large and dark. The heart-shaped ears droop down and are covered with long hair. The feathered tail is held high and to one side of the body.
