A series of animals go into the lost mitten; they are trying to get warm on a very cold day. Some of the animals that go into the mitten are a mole, a rabbit, an owl, a badger, a hedgehog, a fox, a wolf, a wild boar, a bear, a cricket, and a mouse.

The stretched-out mitten cannot hold quite so many animals, and when the mouse enters, the mitten splits apart into many pieces. The animals are dumped out onto the snow.

Later, the little boy found the pieces of his mitten in the forest. He never knew what happened to it. His grandmother knitted him a new mitten so his hand would not get cold.
