Venus and Jupiter - Conjunction of August 2014

Venus and Jupiter - Conjunction of August 2014

Venus and Jupiter in their closest conjunction of 2014 — superimposed, for scale, on the moon of a week ago (grayed out). You can see that the two planets appeared closer in the sky than the diameter of the full moon.

Venus, on the left, is in its gibbous phase, 95.2% illuminated.

The four Galilean moons of Jupiter are visible: from top to bottom, Europa, Io, Callisto, and Ganymede. (Venus and Jupiter are overexposed so that the Galilean satellites would be bright enough to see.)
