Solar Prominences During a Total Solar Eclipse

This photo, from the 2017 total solar eclipse, shows solar prominences erupting from the sun. These normally can't be seen because the sun is so bright, but they can be observed when the moon blocks the disk of the sun.

The prominences may look small, but that's only because the sun is so big—these prominences are several times the size of the earth!
