The Miniature Schnauzer is an active, alert, intelligent, and friendly dog that is a type of terrier. It was originally bred hundreds of years ago in Germany from the Standard Schnauzer and the Affenpinscher. The Miniature Schnauzer was used to hunt rodents on farms. The word schnauzer means "muzzle" or "snout" in German.

Anatomy: The Miniature Schnauzer is about 12 to 14 inches (31-36 cm) high at shoulders and weighs 13 to 15 pounds (6-7 kg). The dense, wiry coat is black, black and silver, or salt and pepper (with black and white banded hairs - the white bands are towards the body and the black bands are towards the tips) The coat consists of two layers: a wiry outercoat and a close innercoat. The tail and ears are often docked (trimmed surgically).
