Carcharodontosaurus was a huge, meat-eating dinosaur- it was slightly longer than T. rex. Carcharodontosaurus lived during the middle Cretaceous period, roughly 90 million years ago, in what is now Northern Africa. This giant predator probably ate plant-eating dinosaurs.

Anatomy: Carcharodontosaurus was from 26 to 44 feet long (8-14 m) long and stood about 12 feet (3.7 m) tall (at the hips); it weighed perhaps 7 to 8 tons. It walked on two legs, and it had a massive tail, a bulky body, and heavy bones. Its arms were short, and it had three-fingered hands with sharp claws. Carcharodontosaurus had enormous jaws with 8-inch long serrated teeth in a skull that was as big as a person - 5'4" (1.6 m) long. Although this dinosaur was larger than T. rex, its brain was smaller.

Fossils and Name: Carcharodontosaurus means "shark-toothed lizard". A fossil was originally unearthed in Africa by paleontologist Ernst Stromer von Reichenbach in central Egypt. Carcharodontosaurus was named by Stromer von Reichenbach in 1931. The original Carcharodontosaurus fossil (which had been moved to Germany) was destroyed in 1944 by a World War II bombing raid. Paul Sereno found another Carcharodontosaurus skull in the Moroccan Sahara in 1995.
