Origin of Breed: The Basset Hound originated in France hundreds of years ago. It was bred to hunt badgers, rabbits and hares.
Anatomy: The Basset Hound is a heavy hound with long, droopy ears. It is from 13 to 15 inches (33-38 cm) tall at the shoulders and weighs about 40 to 60 pounds (18-27 kg). The head is large and the skull is domed. The short, smooth coat comes in many colors with varied markings; the skin is loose and elastic.
