Jack Rabbits are large, long-legged, long-eared hares from western North America. Hares are similar to, but larger than rabbits; they usually have long ears tipped in black. They are fast-moving mammals that leap. Jack Rabbits live in a variety of environments, including deserts, forests, grasslands, and prairies. Jack Rabbits were given their name because their ears resemble those of jackasses.

Most hares live for about a year in the wild. These solitary animals are hunted by dogs, foxes, raccoons, weasels, bobcats, lynxes, hawks, eagles, and people. Hares have a fast reproductive rate.

Anatomy: Jack Rabbits are about 2 feet (0.6 m) long. They have very long, powerful hind legs and big hind feet which they use to leap and to dig burrows. Their ears are about 5 inches (13 cm) long.

Diet: Jack Rabbits are herbivores (plant-eaters). They eat grasses, herbs, leaves, bark, and twigs.

Classification: Kingdom Animalia (animals), Phylum Chordata (having a notochord), Class Mammalia (mammals), Order Lagomorpha (rabbits, hares, and pikas), Family Leporidae (rabbits and hares), Genus Lepus (many species of Jack Rabbits and other hares).
