Alton - a city in southwestern Illinois; it is located southwest of Springfield and on the Mississippi River. Bloomington - a city in Illinois located northeast of Springfield and southwest of Chicago. Carbondale - a city in southern Illinois. Charles Mound - the highest point in Illinois; it is located in northwestern Illinois. Chicago - a huge city in northeastern Illinois; it is on the southwestern shores of Lake Michigan. DeKalb - a city in northern Illinois; it is located west of Chicago. Illinois River - a river that runs diagonally through central Illinois, emptying into the Mississippi River near Alton. Indiana - the state that borders Illinois on the east. Iowa - the state that borders Illinois on the northwest, across the Mississippi River. Kentucky - the state borders Illinois on the southeast, across the Ohio River. |
Lake Michigan - one of the Great Lakes; northeastern Illinois is on the shores of this huge lake. Mississippi River - a huge river that forms the western border of Illinois, separating Illinois from Iowa and Missouri. (Label it on the map in two places.) Missouri - the state that borders Illinois on the southwest, across the Mississippi River. Ohio River - a river that forms Illinois' southeastern border, separating Illinois from Kentucky. Peoria - an Illinois city on the Illinois River; Peoria is located north of Springfield and northwest of Bloomington. Quincy - a western Illinois city located on the Mississippi River; Quincy is west of Springfield. Springfield - the capital city of Illinois; it is located in central Illinois. Wabash River - a river that runs through Indiana, then runs along the southeastern border of Illinois and into the Ohio River. Wisconsin - the state that borders Illinois on the north. |
