The Test of Time A Novel by I. MacPenn |
Could a Spinosaurus go under water and be deep enough to only be showing it's spine? Was it amphibious?
from Jack B.,
age 8, Killeen, TX, USA; July 16, 2001
TOM: Spinosaurus, like most dinosaurs, probably could swim even if they didn't spend a lot of time in the water. After all, even horses could swim. However, I suspect that not only the sail but most of the back and the top of the head would show.
There is no strong evidence that Spinosaurus was as amphibious as an alligator, for example. However, it did live in the coastal swamps of what is now northern Africa, and it probably ate a lot of fish as well as dinosaurs, so I wouldn't be suprised if it didn't wade out into streams and lakes like a gigantic grizzly bear.
