answer dinosaur questions for the readers of ZoomDinosaurs.com
:

If you are writing a book on Jurassic Park, are you going to point out any errors in the movie? For example, the Velociraptors being too big (that myth still persists today, a loyal misconception from the first movie), The Dilos having no frill and being quite a big bigger, the Spinosaurus being reconstructed virtually wrong in every expect in regard to proportion and size and how smart the raptors really were? (I've heard current theories don't put the raptors at being really smart at all) Given your profesion, why don't you audit something for a more accucrate dinosaur series like Walking With Dinosaurs?

Alright, alright, I know its just a movie, but these inaccuracies really bug me, and kids can be surprisingly knowledgable.
from Colin G., age 16, Cameron Highlands, ?, Malaysia; July 2, 2001

TOM: Actually, if you check out our book JPI Dinosaur Field Guide, you'll see that we correct almost all the mistakes you point out, plus more!! (It is true that dromaeosaurs (raptors) were no where near as smart as chimpanzees, but they were among the brainier dinosaurs).

Also, I and several other paleontologists were involved with the creation of the Walking with Dinosaurs documentary. Now there are also some errors in that show, too, but you are right: it is a lot more accurate. (Check out "Walking With Dinosaurs: The Evidence" by Dave Martill and Darren Naish for information about the history and both accuracies and inaccuracies of that show).
