Australian (and Nearby Islands) Animal to Paint Online |
There are many animals on the island of Australia and on the nearby islands, including Tasmania, New Zealand, and New Guinea (to name but a few). Many animals are unique to this part of the world.
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world; it is off the northeast coast of Australia. There are also many flightless birds in Australia and nearby islands. Some dinosaur fossils have also been found in Australia; these reptiles roamed Australia over 65 million years ago.
On these pages, Australia is regarded as an island and a continent (but not as a country; political affiliations are ignored).

Blue Whale A baleen whale that is the largest animal ever on Earth. |
Cassowary A huge, flightless bird from Australia with a helmet-like crest on its head. |
Cockatoo Cockatoos are birds with a large, feathery crest and a hooked bill. |
Dingo The dingo is a wild dog from Australia. |
Dinornis The largest bird that ever lived. This flightless bird is extinct, but lived in New Zealand until the early 1800's. |
Duck-Billed Platypus The Duck-billed Platypus is a primitive mammal from Australia. |
Echidna The echidna is a primitive, egg-laying mammal from Australia and New Guinea. |
Ekaltadeta A huge, extinct, meat-eating rat-kangaroo from Australia. |
Emu The emu is a large Australian bird that cannot fly. |
Frilled Lizard A lizard with a huge neck frill. |
Great White Shark An enormous, ferocious predator found worldwide. |
Humpback Whale A long-flippered baleen whale that sings and frolics in the water. |
Kakapo A large, flightless, nocturnal, solitary parrot from New Zealand. |
Kangaroo Kangaroos hop and have pouches. Their babies are called joeys. |
Kiwi A chicken-sized flightless bird from New Zealand. |
Koala The koala is an Australian marsupial. It is not a bear. |
Kookaburra A large bird from the mainland Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea. |
Leaellynasaura An Australian plant-eating dinosaur with large eyes. |
Moa A huge, extinct, flightless bird from New Zealand. |
Monotremes Monotremes are primitive, egg-laying mammals. Spiny anteaters and the duck-billed platypus are monotremes. |
Minke Whale The smallest baleen whale. It has a white band on each flipper. |
Muttaburrasaurus A plant-eating dinosaur with thumb spikes. |
Nabarlek A small wallaby from northern Australia. |
Numbat The numbat (also known as the banded anteater) is a pouchless, diurnal marsupial. |
Quokka The Quokka is a marsupial from Australia, a type of wallaby. |
Quoll The Quoll is a cat-sized carnivorous marsupial from the island of Tasmania and mainland Australia. |
Rainbow Lorikeet A small, colorful, brush-tongued parrot from Australia. |
Red Kangaroo Red Kangaroos are large roos from Australia. |
