Location: Argentina (officially called the Argentine Republic) is a country in southern South America. Argentina is bordered by Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Capital: Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina.
Size: Argentina covers about 2,780,400 square kilometers (about 3/10 as big as the USA). Argentina is the second-largest country in South America (after Brazil) and the 8th largest country in the world (after Russia, Canada, USA, China, Brazil, Australia, and India).
Population: The people of Argentina are called Argentinians. Argentina has the 32nd largest population of any country in the world. The population of Argentina is about 41,343,201 (as of July, 2010).
Government: Argentina is a republic that is divided into 23 provinces and one autonomous city. The national holiday is Revolution Day, celebrated on May 25. Argentina became independent from Spain on July 9, 1816.
Language: The official language is Spanish. Other languages include Italian, English, German, and French.
Education: Girls in Argentina go to school for an average of 17 years; boys go for an average of 15 years.
Literacy Rate: About 97.2% (almost all) of the adults in Argentina can read and write. About 97.2% of the men and 97.2% of the women are literate.
Religion: Roman Catholic 92% (less than 20% practicing), Protestant 2%, Jewish 2%, other 4%.
Flag of Argentina : Argentina's flag is a light blue and white triband with a yellow "Sun of May" in the center. The flag is twice as wide as it is tall.
This flag was adopted on February 12, 1812, four years before Argentina declared independence from Spain (1816). The "Sun of May" design was added to the flag in 1818.
The blue and white colors were chosen by Manuel Belgrano, the leader of the Argentinian revolution against Spain, and represent the blue sky parting to reveal white clouds, as is said to have happened when the Liberation demonstration began in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on May 25, 1810. Argentina's Flag Day is celebrated on 20th June, the anniversary of Belgrano's death.
Climate: Argentina is mostly temperate. It is arid in southeast and subantarctic in southwest.
Major Rivers: Rio Paraná and Rio de la Plata.
Terrain/Mountain Ranges: There are the rich plains of the Pampas in the northern half, the flat to rolling plateau of Patagonia in south, and the rugged Andes mountains along the western border.
Highest Point: The highest point in Argentina is Cerro Aconcagua, which is the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere; it is 6,960 m above sea level; it is located in western central Argentina near the border with Chile.
Lowest Point: The lowest point in Argentina is Laguna del Carbon, at 105 m below sea level; it is in southeastern Argentina near the coast.
Natural Resources: fertile plains of the pampas, lead, zinc, tin, copper, iron ore, manganese, petroleum, uranium.
Major Industries: food processing, motor vehicles, consumer durables, textiles, chemicals and petrochemicals, printing, metallurgy, steel.
Agricultural Products: sunflower seeds, lemons, soybeans, grapes, corn, tobacco, peanuts, tea, wheat; livestock.
