Population: The people of Tunisia are called Tunisians. Tunisia has the 77th largest population of any country in the world. The population of Tunisia is about 10,589,025 (as of July, 2010).
Government: Tunisia is a federal republic that is divided into 24 governorates. Tunisia's national holiday is Independence Day, celebrated on March 20 (Tunisia became independent from France on March 20, 1956).
Language: The official language is Arabic. French is also spoken.
Education: Girls in Tunisia go to school for an average of 15 years; boys in Tunisia go to school for an average of 14 years.
Literacy Rate: About 74.3% (almost three-quarters) of the adults in Tunisia can read and write. About 83.4% of the men and 65.3% of the women are literate.
Religion: Muslim 98%, Christian 1%, Jewish and other 1%.
Tunisia's Flag: Tunisia's flag has a red field with a white circle in the center containing a red crescent and five-pointed star (traditional symbols of Islam). This flag is based on the flag of Turkey Ottoman flag (Tunisia used to be part of the Ottoman Empire). The color red symbolizes the blood of martyrs and white stands for peace.

Lowest Point: The lowest point in Tunisia is Shatt al Gharsah, at 17 m below sea level; it is located in western Tunisia (near the Algerian border).
Natural Resources: petroleum, phosphates, iron ore, lead, zinc, salt.
Major Industries: petroleum, mining (particularly phosphate and iron ore), tourism, textiles, footwear, agribusiness, beverages.
Agricultural Products: olives, olive oil, grain, tomatoes, citrus fruit, sugar beets, dates, almonds; beef, dairy products.
