Hydrogen = H Periodic Table of the Elements

Abbreviation: Hydrogen's abbreviation is H.

Atomic Number: Hydrogen is the element with the atomic number 1 -- it has one proton in its nucleus.

Atomic Weight: Hydrogen's atomic weight is 1.0079 .

Where do you find Hydrogen?: Hydrogen is the lightest element and makes up most of the universe (about 90% of the universe is made of hydrogen). Hydrogen is a major component of stars. Water is made from hydrogen and oxygen (H2O).

Properties: At standard temperature and pressure (STP) on Earth, hydrogen is a colorless, flammable gas (it is the lightest gas). On Earth, most of the hydrogen is found in water (in combination with oxygen) and in organic material, including plants, animals, oil, coal, etc.; very little hydrogen gas is in the atmosphere (that is because this light-weight gas develops very fast speeds when it collides with other molecules in the atmosphere, and eventually flies out of the atmosphere).

Melting Point: 14.01 degrees Kelvin
Boiling Point: 20.28 degrees Kelvin

Isotopes: Hydrogen is the only element whose isotopes have been assigned different names. They are:

Discovery: Hydrogen was discovered by Henry Cavendish in 1766 (in London, England).

Name: Hydrogen was named by the French chemist Antoine Lavoisier (1779). The word hydrogen is from the Greek language, meaning water-forming (hydro means water and genes means forming).

Odd Quote About Hydrogen: "There is more stupidity than hydrogen in the universe, and it has a longer shelf life." by Frank Zappa, musician.
