Most crustaceans live in water, but some live on land. Crustaceans are the most numerous animals in the oceans, but some crustaceans live on fresh water. There are about 30,500 species of crustaceans around the world.

Classification: Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Arthropoda, Class Crustacea, Subclasses:

• Subclass Cephalocarida (primitive, shrimp-like, discovered in 1955) - 4 species
• Subclass Branchiopoda (with flattened gill-carrying appendages) - 1200 species, including brine shrimp
• Subclass Ostracoda (tiny, with 2 hinged shells) - 20,000 species, including mussel shrimp
• Subclass Copepoda (a tiny constituent of plankton) - 4500 species, including Calanus
• Subclass Mystacocarida (related to copepods) - 3 species
• Subclass Branchiura (flattened body, sucking mouth parts, no gills) - 75 species, including fish lice
• Subclass Cirripedia (attach to objects by a stalk from their head) - 800 specis, including barnacles
• Subclass Malacostraca - 18000 species, including lobsters, shrimp, crabs, woodlice

Hermit Crab Hermit crabs are crabs that lack a hard shell; they use a discarded shell for protection.

Krill Small crustaceans that are eaten by many animals, including baleen whales.

Lobster A hard-shelled marine invertebrate with 10 jointed legs.

Shrimp Shrimp are small, bottom-dwelling crustaceans with a translucent exoskeleton.

Trilobite Trilobites are extinct marine crustaceans that lived in the seas from about 540 to 245 million years ago.
