Some Extinct Animals (Excluding Dinosaurs)!

A lot of plants and animals existed during the Mesozoic along with the dinosaurs. Some animals were closely related to the dinosaurs, like the pterosaurs , which belong to the Archosaur clade, as do the dinosaurs. Other archosaurs include the crocodilians (crocodiles, alligators, etc.) and the birds , and pterosaurs. (All dinosaurs lived on land; none of them flew or lived in the seas.)

Many well-known animals lived before the dinosaurs did. Trilobites (which were arthropods, as are crabs, insects, and spiders) dominated the seas during the late Cambrian period (540-500 million years ago). Much later, in the late Paleozoic Era, during the Permian period, the Dimetrodons lived. The Dimetrodon is more closely related to us than to the dinosaurs.

The following are not dinosaurs, but they are prehistoric and interesting

AMMONITE

An early mollusk; a fast-moving predatory marine invertebrate.

ARCHAEOPTERYX

A very early bird; it lived about 150 million years ago.

ARCHELON

A car-sized marine turtle from the late Cretaceous.

CHAMPSOSAURUS

A Cretaceous reptile.

CRYPTOCLIDUS

A large, extinct, swimming reptile from the time of the dinosaurs - a plesiosaur.

Desmatosuchus

An extinct reptile that lived over 200 million years ago.

DIMETRODON

An extinct, sail-backed, meat-eating animal from the Permian period (pre-dating the dinosaurs).

DIMETRODON

(Simple version)

An extinct, sail-backed, meat-eating animal from the Permian period (pre-dating the dinosaurs).

DIMORPHODON

A pterosaur with a big head.

DOEDICURUS

Doedicurus (family glyptodontidae) was an ancient armadillo with a tail mace. It lived during the Ice Ages - long after the dinosaurs died.

DSUNGARIPTERUS

A pterosaur with an unusual head crest.

ERYOPS

Eryops was a common, primitive amphibian that lived in swamps during the Permian period.

ELASMOSAURUS

Elasmosaurus was a huge Cretaceous marine reptile - the largest plesiosaur.

ESTEMMENOSUCHUS

A large "mammal-like reptile" that lived about 255 million years ago.

GERROTHORAX

An ancient amphibian that lived over 200 million years ago.

GLYPTODON

Glyptodon was a car-sized armadillo that lived during the Ice Ages, long after the dinosaurs died.

HYLONOMUS

One of the oldest-known reptiles.

ICHTHYORNIS

An extinct bird from the time of the dinosaurs.

ICHTHYOSAUR

Air-breathing marine reptiles with fins.

KRONOSAURUS

A large Cretaceous marine reptile; a short-necked plesiosaur.

LIPOLEURODON

Liopleurodon was the biggest plesiosaur. It was a huge swimming reptile that lived over a hundred million years ago, during the Jurassic period.

MEGALODON

A huge, extinct shark that lived from roughly 25 to 1.6 million years ago, long after the dinosaurs.

MOSASAUR

Giant marine lizards from the Mesozoic Eras.

MOSCHOPS

Moschops is an extinct plant-eater that lived before the dinosaurs.
Nothosaurus

NOTHOSAURS

Triassic reptiles with flipper-like limbs that lived both on land and in the water.

PLESIOSAURS

Mesozoic marine reptiles.

PLESIOSAURUS

An extinct, fish-eating marine reptile with four flippers, a plesiosaur.
Postosuchus

POSTOSUCHUS

Postosuchus is an extinct reptile that lived over 200 million years ago.

PTERANODON

Large, Cretaceous pterosaurs, flying prehistoric reptiles.

PTERODACTYLS

Flying reptiles (a subgroup of pterosaurs) from the Jurassic and Cretaceous.

PTEROSAUR

Flying reptiles from the Mesozoic Era; they were closely related to dinosaurs.

QUETZALCOATLUS

The largest pterosaur.

RHAMPHORHYNCHUS

A small pterosaur with a 3.25 feet (1 m) wide wingspan.

TERATOSAURUS

Teratosaurus was an extinct reptile that lived about 225 million years ago.
