ANATOMY
Xiaosaurus was a small, lightly-built dinosaur. It was an herbivore (a plant-eater) and a fast, agile runner. It was small and lizard-like, about 5 feet (1.5 m) long. It walked on two long legs, had four-toed feet, five-fingered hands, short arms, a long, stiff, pointed tail, a flexible neck, and a small head with large eyes. It had leaf-shaped cheek teeth.

WHEN XIAOSAURUS LIVED
Xiaosaurus lived during the middle Jurassic period, about 169-163 million years ago.

DIET
Xiaosaurus was an herbivore (plant-eater) that ate low-lying plants.

INTELLIGENCE
Xiaosaurus was an ornithopod, whose intelligence (as measured by its relative brain to body weight, or EQ) was midway among the dinosaurs.

EQ

LOCOMOTION
Xiaosaurus was a fast bipedal (two-legged) dinosaur. Dinosaur speeds are estimated using their morphology (characteristics like leg length and estimated body mass) and fossilized trackways.

DISCOVERY OF FOSSILS
Xiaosaurus was named by Dong Zhiming and Tang Zilu in 1983. Fossils have been found in China.

PRINTOUT

CLASSIFICATION
Xiaosaurus was a genus of ornithischian dinosaurs, the order of bird-hipped, herbivorous dinosaurs. It was an ornithopod ( the bird-footed, beaked, bipedal, herbivorous dinosaurs), and belonged to the family Fabrosauridae (the earliest ornithopods, which include Alocodon, Gongbusaurus, Lufengocephalus, Nanosaurus, Technosaurus, and Xiaosaurus). Unlike other ornithischians, the fabrosaurids did not have cheek pouches. The fabrosaurids may have given rise to all of the later ornithischan dinosaurs.

The type species is Xiaosaurus dashanpensis, named by Dong and Tang in 1983 (although this is a nomen dubium, a dubious name, since so little is known about this dinosaur).
