New Zealand Animal Printouts |
There are many animals on the isolated islands of New Zealand, including some native animals and others that have been introduced. Some of the animals native to New Zealand include: a few primitive frogs, two species of bats, a few reptiles (the tuatara, gecko, and skink), and many birds (like the kiwi, kakapo, New Zealand pigeon, takahe, blue penguin, yellow-eyed penguin, spotted shag, white-faced heron, blue duck, weka, the extinct dinornis and moa, etc.). The only poisonous animal native to New Zealand is the katipo, a red-black spider, one of the deadliest spiders in the world. There are no snakes native to New Zealand. Many of New Zealand's native species are on the decline and some, like the kakapo, are on the verge of extinction.
Some of New Zealand's introduced animals include the Australian opossum, goats, deer, rabbits, rats, hedgehogs, cats, dogs, stoats, ferrets, and the black swan. Many of the introduced animals have become pests, reproducing at fast rates and edging out native species.
The following is a sampling of these amazing creatures. Click on an animal to go to a printout:
Black Swan A dark swan originally from Australia, but introduced to New Zealand (and now considered a pest). |
Bluebottle Also known as the Portuguese man-of-war, this floating colony of animals has very long, stinging tentacles. It lives in warm ocean waters. |
Dinornis The largest bird that ever lived. This flightless bird is extinct, but lived in New Zealand until the early 1800's. |
John Dory The John Dory is a spiny fish with a black spot on its side. |
Hedgehog Hedgehogs are small mammals that can roll into a prickly ball. They have been introduced to New Zealand. |
Kakapo A large, flightless, nocturnal, solitary parrot from New Zealand. |
Kiwi A chicken-sized flightless bird from New Zealand. |
Moa A huge, extinct, flightless bird from New Zealand. |
Stoat Also known as short-tailed weasel or ermine, this tiny, ferocious mammal lives in cold areas and has been introduced to New Zealand. |
Tuatara An unusual reptile from islands off New Zealand. |
Wallaby Wallabies are small to medium-sized kangaroos. Wallabies were introduced to New Zealand in the 1880's. |

In addition to printing the animals, you can copy a printout (click here for instructions) and paste it into a painting program (like Paint) and color the animal there. (Thanks to Grace P. from Thorngrove School for this great idea.)
