Canada: Canada's national flag features the maple leaf, the country's symbol. This red and white flag was decided upon by the government on December 15, 1964.
Other Canadian symbols include:
O Canada!
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
From far and wide,
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
How Canada was Named: Canada was named by the French explorer Jacques Cartier (1491-1557). "Kanata" means village or settlement in the Huron-Iroquois language. Cartier was given directions by Huron-Iroquois indians for the route to "kanata," a village near what is now Quebec, but Cartier later named the entire region Canada.
Cartier led three expeditions to the Canada, in 1534, 1535, and 1541. He was looking for a route to the Pacific through North America, but of course, did not find one. He sailed inland, going 1,000 miles up the St. Lawrence River. He also tried to start a settlement in Quebec (in 1541), but it was abandoned after a terribly cold winter.
Canada is a large country in North America.
